Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... For Now.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that Pluribus would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Fan Response
Anyone might to get distracted by the rampant praise and online debates surrounding Pluribus. He is striving to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it from others, and that's by design. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan See the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff are not listening by fan response, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, why mess with the classics?
“I want Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
