Number Ten: The Percussionist Sarathy Korwar – There Is Beauty, There Already
A continuous, 40-minute suite of cyclical drumming might not seem the easiest musical proposition. However, Indian drummer and composer Sarathy Korwar transforms this persistent pulse into a strangely alluring album. Leading an ensemble of three drummers, Korwar creates a intricate percussive dialect over the record's 10 movements. The work references Steve Reich's phasing motifs combined with Indian classical phrasing, everything tethered in the recurrence of a persistent, pulsing figure. Over its duration, this refrain begins to emulate the trance-inducing cycles of ceremonial music, drawing the listener further into Korwar's singular percussive realm.
9. The Lebanese Artist Yasmine Hamdan – I Remember I Forget
Coming off an eight-year break, Arab singer-songwriter Yasmine Hamdan makes a comeback with a melancholy collection of songs. The work builds upon the Arabic-language, dub-tinged sound that cemented her status in the Arab alternative scene since the 1990s. Hamdan's vocal delivery is soft and ruminative, singing soft melodies over the bowing strings of a track like Hon and the rolling trip-hop groove of Vows. On livelier tracks such as Shadia and Abyss, she uses a wavering, longing vibrato over electronic lines with North African flavors and clattering electronic percussion. Number Eight: The Mexican Producer Debit – Slowed Down
From Mexico electronic artist Debit excels at haunting reimaginings of historical sounds. For her most recent project, Desaceleradas, she turns her attention to the 1990s variant of cumbia rebajada – a slowed, dubby take of the rhythmic Latin American dance music genre. Debit decelerates this sound to a near-halt, running its signature synths and off-beat rhythm through sheets of distortion and static to create a fresh, foreboding groove. Periodically ambient and uneasy, Debit converts the joyous party music of cumbia into a enduring, ghostly echo.
7. DJ K – Liberator Radio!
Sensory overload is the operative word for the output of São Paulo producer Kaique Vieira, AKA DJ K. Pioneering his own genre of "bruxaria" (witchcraft), Vieira stacks a tumult of sirens, pummeling bass tones and screamed lyrics on top of the enduring Brazilian dance style of baile funk. This captures the propulsive sound of neighborhood block parties. On his second album, Radio Libertadora!, Vieira escalates the energy, throwing in everything from techno kick drums to the sound of the Islamic call to prayer into his frantic bruxaria mix. The result is a particularly hyperactive and deafeningly intense 40-minute sonic journey. Surrender to the cacophony and Vieira's brash productions become unexpectedly exhilarating.
Number Six: The Singer Mohinder Kaur Bhamra – Disco Punjabi
Religious vocalist Mohinder Kaur Bhamra's early-80s release of disco music and traditional Punjabi tunes is a rediscovered masterpiece. Recorded by her son, music producer Kuljit Bhamra, Punjabi Disco's ten tracks offer an remarkably compelling fusion of the synthetic sound of early synthesizers and drum machines with her melismatic classical Indian vocal technique. Electronic percussion echoes the rolling tones of the traditional drums, while synth lines replicates the traditional sound of the harmonium on tracks such as Pyar Mainu Kar. At other times, Latin-inflected grooves is prominent on Soniya Mukh Tera, and Nainan Da Pyar De Gaya channels a up-tempo walking disco bassline. It's a dancefloor fusion pioneered more than ten years before the global breakthrough of South Asian electronic music.
Number Five: Enji – Sonor
Mongolian singer Enji's soft new release, Sonor, expands on her jazz-inflected sound to deliver some of her broadest music to date. Departing from her training in traditional Mongolian "long song" singing, the record's selection of pieces veer from the soft jazz-pop melodies of downtempo number Ulbar to the German-language narration lyrics and twanging guitar lines of Unadag Dugui. The album also includes a lively, funk-inflected cover of the 80s Mongolian pop hit Eejiinhee Hairaar. Featuring a full backing band rather than her typical setup of guitar and bass, Sonor's sound manages to stay intimate, inviting the listener into the tender acoustics of her distinctive voice.
4. Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek – If There Is No Tomorrow
Channeling the psychedelic tradition of Turkish psychedelia pioneered by groups such as Moğollar, Turkish-born, Germany-based singer Derya Yıldırım's latest work alongside her group blends the distinctive buzz of the amplified traditional lute with woozy keyboard and soulful tunes. It's a nostalgic vibe rooted in Yıldırım's powerful high register and shaped by producer Leon Michels' warm, tape-saturated sound. But, on classic Turkish songs such as the nursery rhyme Hop Bico and 60s classic Ceylan, the group ventures into dynamic new territory. They create sinuous, downtempo grooves and lifting vocals that give a novel, off-kilter interpretation to the Anatolian psychedelic style.
Number Three: The Colombian Artist Lido Pimienta – La Belleza
Sacred music, Eastern European folk melodies and orchestral strings all come together on Colombian-born singer Lido Pimienta's extraordinary latest work. Arranging music for the 60-piece Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra, Pimienta and producer Owen Pallett journey through a vast range including the Gregorian chants of opener Overturn (Obertura de la Luz Eterna) to the theatrical interweaving lines of Aún Te Quiero and the rhythmic dembow rhythms of the brass and woodwind-led El Dembow del Tiempo.
