The people of Israel mark two-year anniversary of October 7th attacks as Gaza ceasefire negotiations advance
Israelis have gathered around the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered trustworthy by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our violent enemies have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.
He also vowed to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The national leadership postponed formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was held across the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the agreement.
A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source stated the earlier meeting ended without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He added that the discussions are "difficult and have still not produce any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to close the gaps between the both parties.
Key Points in Talks
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies provision
- After-conflict management of the territory
Civilian Feeling
In the city's public square previously, young Hagar - whose family member endured the assault on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "Nowhere feels like home now and until every captive return no one will be secure."
"Once we see all home returned, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to heal," she continued.
In front of the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel states nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire assurances that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that around 70% of the population prefer the conflict to end in return for the release of the captives.
Palestinian Conditions
At the area of the music event, mourners gathered to pay their respects.
From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the urban center, attacks were noted in the morning of that day in the western district, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"Once the night falls, the anxiety appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, embracing, notably my smallest child who rests his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we look at the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will return to us."
Medical Crisis
The medical facility in the urban area said it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the south region of Khan Younis indicated two more victims had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while looking for assistance to the south region, medical staff stated.
