The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

When I walk into the space, the young midfielder picks up a football he clings to throughout our chat. It’s a simple symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

In time, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

However, the famed academy – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back home,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Year and Continental Arrival

That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to victory and being named player of the tournament.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits he must to control his competitive fire, having been shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. He is frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills belief.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
