The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Detailing His 20 Days Incarcerated
Nicolas Sarkozy plans a personal account this autumn titled Notes from a Cell, which recounts the period endured in jail.
This news emerged just 11 days after the former president left prison as he contests his conviction on charges of illegal collaboration connected to efforts to secure political financing linked to the government of the late Libyan dictator.
Life Behind Bars: Solitary Musings
“Inside jail visibility is limited, and activities are scarce,” he writes in one passage, indicating the memoir is more about his thoughts during isolation rather than a broader observation of the packed and crisis-hit French prison system.
“Quiet is absent, which doesn’t exist in that facility, where there is endless commotion,” he adds. “The noise persists relentlessly. However, akin to empty spaces, personal reflection is fortified in prison.”
Freedom Plea: Describing the Ordeal
At his release request hearing, the former leader participated by video link from his cell, depicting prison life as gruelling. He expressed in court: “I want to pay tribute those working in the jail, showing great humanity, and who helped make this ordeal tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”
“I didn’t expect that in my seventies, I would end up incarcerated. It’s an ordeal I must endure. I admit it’s difficult, deeply straining. It affects one all who experience it as it’s exhausting.”
Unprecedented Situation
Sarkozy, who led the nation for a five-year term, was the first ex-leader from the EU and the first leader since WWII of France to be incarcerated.
Ahead of his incarceration he had said he planned to utilize the opportunity for authoring a memoir.
Books in Prison
Unconfirmed is did he manage to review and analyze the volumes he brought with him: a biography of Jesus in two parts plus the novel by Dumas The Count of Monte Cristo, in which a wrongfully accused individual is sentenced to jail but escapes to seek vengeance.
Life in Confinement
The former leader was held secluded due to safety concerns in a room approximately nine square meters with his own shower and toilet at La Santé prison in Paris. Guards occupied a neighbouring cell.
It was stated that he had eaten only yoghurts in prison because he feared any food may have been contaminated. Although he had access for self-catering but refused this, according to reports. Not known is if the memoir includes what he ate in prison.
Legal Perspective
His attorney, who visited his client every day while he was in prison, stated during proceedings security would be better out of prison than inside. “There were threats against his life, heard shouts during nighttime and emergency responses in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”
Charges and Sentence
His incarceration began on 21 October following a Paris court sentenced him to five years in prison for illegal collaboration over a scheme to secure political donations for his presidential bid.
He denies wrongdoing and has appealed against the verdict, and a fresh trial is scheduled for early next year.
