Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
