Over 50 unaccompanied young refugees who vanished shortly after coming the UK and while being looked after by government agencies are still missing, as per figures gathered.

Numerous of the missing children arrived in small boats or concealed in the rear compartments of lorries and are presumed to have been seized by traffickers. This region is frequently the location where they arrive.

Statistical Information Indicates Concerning Numbers

Disclosed data has recorded 345 children vanishing from local care, with 56 of those yet to be located.

From 2021 and 2023, when temporary accommodations for children were run combined with hotels in other areas, 132 children disappeared from these facilities. From this group, 108 were eventually recovered but 24 are yet to be found.

From 2020 and August 2025, 213 children vanished from reception centres for these minors, with 182 found and 32 yet to be accounted for.

In the two scenarios, Albanian children were the biggest contingent to disappear, making up 50% the overall number from the hotels, 68, and over 25% from the reception centres, 65.

The second and third largest nationalities to have gone missing from the two settings are individuals from Afghanistan then Iranians.

"These figures are disturbing. For every statistic is a frightened child who will already have experienced grave mistreatment preceding their arrival in the UK looking for protection."

Advocacy representatives highlighted that when supporting children who have fled after being exploited whilst vanished, they witness how their psychological and bodily well-being is lastingly damaged by the exploitation they suffer during this time.

"If just one youth to go missing represents an total collapse of the state to safeguard the most fragile and mistreated in their care. These statistics are in the several hundred."

Urgent Measures to Address the Issue

Advocates said greater efforts are required to find the missing children. "These children did not elect to disappear. These youths should be playing football in the park and studying for their school qualifications, not working for trafficking gangs in situations we know entail being chained to furniture, abused and mistreated, and penalized by being deprived of meals."

Policy Shifts and Persistent Problems

In December 2023, following a protracted high court case relating to unaccompanied minor refugees missing from all hotels, the custom of routinely accommodating children in hotels was deemed improper.

A separate representative stated: "The protection and well-being of lone migrant youths remains a priority, and we take children disappearing very gravely. We persist in periodically examine our systems for developments if this takes place, providing pertinent data with local police forces and local authorities examining the matter."
