The British tennis star earned the most notable victory of his professional journey by rebounding from a lost first set to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had before beaten Alcaraz on two separate matches, this victory marks Norrie's initial victory over a reigning world No 1.

"Massive. Extremely important for me," commented Norrie, who is now the fifth UK male player in the record books to beat a top-ranked player. "Returning from injury last year, I fell in the initial match of qualifying rounds here. I just aimed to appreciate my tennis in the closing months of the year. To get a victory like this, it's the greatest win of my career, my first win over the global number one and likely the most in-form athlete in the sport right now."

Norrie, ranked No 31, also halted Alcaraz's supreme run of nine straight final appearances and 17 straight elite tournament successes, which was the top run of outcomes in the Spaniard's developing professional path.

The top seed looked to be advancing smoothly to a win early on as he sailed past the first set. However, Norrie gradually fought his way back into the game by delivering with improved accuracy and pulling the Spanish opponent into extended, grueling exchanges. His persistent consistency and reliability steadily left its mark.

Through most of the match, the world number one delivered strong serves but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm on his baseline shots. The rising talent appeared especially uneasy hitting his forehand, which has been the most effective stroke in the sport for much of this season, producing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a combined of 54 errors. Across the net, Norrie offered Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, keeping up his consistency, athleticism and power throughout while performing well on serve and selecting opportunities to force himself inside the baseline and play aggressively.
