New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police issued video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate this season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
