Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack
No fewer than 16 people perished and more than 40 were wounded when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.
Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She recounted the events before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
