The galaxy far, far away aficionados are spoiled for choices when it comes to excellent gaming adventures wielding lightsabers, but the world envisioned by George Lucas is more than a playground for conflict. Few series have understood this more thoroughly than Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was forged in the classic computer role-playing game tradition that made studios like Obsidian and BioWare renowned. Now, after a number of delays and setbacks, a major gaming showcase has unveiled that players will soon be able to dive into a spiritual successor to the series. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.
The Big Reveal
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is described as "a fresh single-player narrative-driven action RPG and successor in spirit to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Casey Hudson, previously at BioWare and the game director of the original KOTOR, is at the helm at Arcanaut Studios.
“When we developed the original KOTOR, we wanted to build a quintessential Star Wars experience — designing an adventure that was made of all the things we longed to doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson stated. “Now, 25 years after we started work on that game, our ambitions are equally ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic signifies an chance to investigate a current vision of a definitive Star Wars experience, using state-of-the-art technology and game design, and an completely original story written specifically to realize the combination of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”
A Welcome Surprise
The reveal is somewhat of a unexpected development, given that 2022 saw a recent try at an Old Republic game get pushed back with no date. However, rumors had suggested that a revival of KotOR, as well as one of its follow-up, had been under development through March 2025.
Here is the summary for the new title:
Developed by Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.
The Legacy of KOTOR
The classic role-playing games, which have been made available to platforms like the Switch, are known for their conversation-rich, choice-driven, and stat-imbued approach to Star Wars. The games were impactful enough that they unintentionally established how people imagine the Old Republic time period as a whole, even now. The games dared to question many beliefs of Jedi lore that are often treated as unquestionable, like whether the faction and its understanding of the Force are right. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, went in a considerably bleaker direction by inviting players to consider if the world might not be wiser without the Jedi at all. Both games are highly regarded by fans years after their release, but the sequel in particular is argued to be as one of the best pieces of Star Wars media in existence.
A New Hope
And now, several years after getting a cinematic trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, the community is at last being granted another game in the similar spirit. Given the appetite for rich games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a modern approach on Knights of the Old Republic that's executed properly has the possibility to be incredibly popular.
