Arteta Hails a More Dependable Team and Confirms Kai Havertz Injury Blow.
Arsenal's manager has expressed confidence that his side can continue to cope with fitness issues after disclosing that forward Kai Havertz will not return for the coming weeks.
Prolonged Recovery for German Star
The German forward has been absent since August following an operation on his knee. Initially expected to return earlier in December, Arteta revealed the player encountered a problem when increasing his recovery and could not progress “the required stage.”
“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a squad that is considerably steadier and has increased versatility,” commented Arteta.
Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture
This update creates a dilemma for the midweek home game against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between persisting with Mikel Merino, who found the net as a makeshift striker on Sunday, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who came back after a fitness issue off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is an option after 11 months out.
Defensive Concerns Remain
Additional concerns surround defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Chelsea match. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to continue in central defence for the league leaders.
The manager is convinced the substantial investment on new players ahead of this season has left Arsenal in a more robust situation to handle such absences.
Greater Options Key to Title Challenge
In response if a larger pool of players was aiding their championship push, the manager agreed. “Yes, as this campaign has presented greater challenges in the attacking line, and now what’s happening with the defence,” he noted.
“We learned from the past that we have to use players in alternative spots, and they have to be able to perform various functions if we are to fight at the highest level. And the instance of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”
Manager’s Sympathy for Frustrated Star
Addressing the complication noted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided more insight. “He was doing everything. He could not go to the required step and now the signs are like we have solved that issue.”
He shared his personal desire to see him return. “The team is keen to have him. Honestly, it’s a player that, personally, I admire greatly for what he brings to the team, but his character, his nature. I observe his frustration being outside.”
